I just posted in another thread about how many archives we own that I have 85 of them. Then I realized that of those 85, I have only read 21 of them so far. I just have trouble keeping up! It's not just archive books either. I constantly find myself pulling books off my shelves that I bought 4,5 or 6 years ago and have yet to read. I work full-time, I go to grad school for an MBA in the evenings, and my brother and I run a small business on the side. I also have a girlfriend. That leaves little time for reading comics! Lately, in an effort to catch up, I have tried to spend at least a half hour before bed reading stories. I am usually a fast reader, but I like to take my time reading comics so I can take it all in. When you're looking at work by Murphy Anderson, Joe Kubert, or Alex Toth, you really need to pay attention to the details! I've noticed that over the past few years, the frequency of archive releases has increased, and while part of me is all for this, another part of me keeps wondering where I will find the time to actually read them! Anyone else having this problem or is it just me? Todd P.S. I'm relatively new to this board, and I absolutely love it! What a great resource for archive fans! Thanks to everyone who takes the time to share their knowledge with the rest of us! IP: Logged |

I have trouble keeping up, but it's in the nature of archives (and reprints in general, if I like 'em well enough to have bought them in the first place) that they're something I want to have over the long term. I need to priotitize better--right now, for instance, I'm stuck re-reading two long series of books (the Wild Cards series and Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books) that are eating a lot of time. But my wife hadn't read the O'Brians, and I'm reding them aloud to her. Still, I already own more books than I'll have time to read before I die.... IP: Logged |

I'm swamped. But on the other hand I may start out with the intention to read the archives in an orderly fashion and then I find myself reading one volume I hadn't intended to look at yet, while leaving my "assigned reading." I've decided that it's best to go with the flow. I know how I am, sometimes I get on a reading jag and then nothing can stop me from barrelling through lots and lots of books. So I will get through my archives eventually. But I always do flip through my latest buys and often study the art even if I don't get around to reading the stories. They're a great reference. quote: When I read the first part of your post, which is quoted above, I was about to jump on to point out to you that at your (our) age, you may never be able to read them in your lifetime. But then I read the rest and saw that you're already facing your mortality — sorta. Back in 1990, I finished a chronological reading of all the Nero Wolfe novels. I'd started in 1975, reading on average only two or three a year, and it took me exactly 25 years. I suddenly realized that at 41 years old, I'd probably never reread them again before I died. That was the moment I realized that my life was probably, literally, half over! Ever since then, I've had this aching feeling that Like the Challengers of the Unknown, I'm living on borrowed time. But 1990 was about the midpoint of that horrible Dark Age of Comics when I wasn't buying new comics, and without that to fuel my interest, I wasn't really rereading my old ones either. There were only a couple Archives and Masterorks out at that point, and I read them as soon as I got them. Other than that, all my reading was non-comic related. Currently I'm back in a real Comic High. I'm enjoying reading the new ones, my old ones, and the TwoMorrows magazines ABOUT comics so much, that I haven't read anything else in some time. And I'm also reorganizing my collection, so I actually have had the old comics out of their boxes. And looking at them has made me want to read them all again. (I suddenly saw myself as Burgess Meredith in the classic Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough At Last" looking at the oiles of books he plans to read — well, we know how THAT turned out). After all this semi-digression, let me return to the archives. I've read very few of them cover-to-cover since I bought them. I do a lot of skimming and page turning, though. The Golden Age DC books are pretty unreadable, so I skim them and just marvel at the energy and fun that leaps forth from the artwork. The Silver Age are easier to read, but I still like to just turn through their pages just for a blast of nostalgia for my childhood when I first read the stories. However, on a couple cold, snowy nights so far this winter, I've hauled out a volume of Batman archives and wrapped up in a blanket to read the stories. I doubt that I'll ever actually read all the archives, unless, God forbid, I become a shut-in someday. So given the choice, I'd rather just keep skimming! In closing, I'll add that since the wonderful A&E Nero Wolfe series premiered a couple seasons ago, I've read yet again almost a third of the Wolfe books. So I just might make it through them again after all. IP: Logged |

I personally feel that the post from Old Dude concerning his reading, and I must say that that is one of the best posts I have read here. I sincerely hope you get the time to finish your reading, as I also hope I do. I am only 51, but due to health problems of the last few years, I keep getting the feeling that I better do this now, while I still have the chance. It gets to be a weird feeling. IP: Logged |

I'm 51 also, and work at a third shift job where I can read a lot. But, I'm always so tired that lately, I haven't got a lot of reading done. And like someone mentioned, I don't necessarily think that I have a bunch of years left. It's always something, eh? Oh, forget it. I got to read the two issues of Filth I got this week... ------------------ IP: Logged |

I have a stack of nine archives & masterworks which I have not yet read. I own about 40 archives and 20 masterworks which I have read. So I'm doing pretty well. I think it is in most collectors' nature that their collections will contain some unread items. Every year or two I take stock of how many comics and novels I have that I've never read, and I cut down my new purchases for several months and catch up on the backlog. Last year I finally read the first six Cerebus phonebooks, which I had bought at a second hand store at least eight years ago, and which had sat on the shelf gathering dust since then. Good reads. And then I sold them on ebay and used the proceeds to buy some videotapes I wanted. IP: Logged |

I'm not too far behind on my Archive reading; I'm almost finished with "Plastic Man, V4", but haven't cracked the half way point on "Wonder Woman, V3, and I've had that for over 6 months now. I set it aside one day and have yet to feel the need to pick it up again. I am so far behind on my fiction and non-fiction, it'll take a solid year to catch up. Fortunately, that may happen. I got fed up with my job last fall and quit. I like to think of myself as "retired", but the savings will run out by the end of the year. I suppose "sabbatical" is more appropriate, except that I don't have a job to go back to. Anyway, I'm doing a lot of reading reading now and enjoying it immmesely. I don't think I've done this much reading since college. I'm looking forward to real retirement in about 25 years, when I can do this sort of thing full time. IP: Logged |

I keep up with my Archives, more or less...but sometimes I get tired of them halfway through, put them down and later forget where I left off! Sometimes I pick up old Archives and read the last few stories in them, hoping I didn't read them before, but my memory's so bad about things like that, that I probably wouldn't know the difference. I do have a problem buying book series and never getting through them all. I went through great pains in the 80s tracking down all forty Oz books...I still have 6 or 8 that I've never read. Same goes for "The Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan, the Xanth series by Piers Anthony and all kinds of crazy stuff that I've picked up over the years. Then there's all those videos and dvds that I've had for ages and never looked at...For some reason I taped the entirety of "Beverly Hills, 90210" a few years back--that's nearly 300 episodes!! Took me months and months to get them all. I've watched up through about episode 60, then stopped. Sigh. By the time I get through them, that show will be having its 20th anniversary special, and the stars will be gray... IP: Logged |

I have trouble keeping up, big time. I've got about 20 archives and 15 TPB's I haven't read, plus about 15 nonfiction and about 40 fiction books. My problem is that between being "on call" all the time and squeezing in 15-20 hours a week to write, I'm very lucky if I can sleep 25 hours a week and maybe get to read a few comics here and there. And, oh yeah, I have to spend SOME time with the ladies... ------------------ Posting by interdimensional relay from my home on Earth-1. IP: Logged |

I have about three or four of the archives left unread (Supergirl, Doom Patrol, a LSH or two...). With some, I tend to read them as soon as I get them (Flash, Green Lantern). Others I tend to skim initially then I pick them up when I have a slow week on new comics - which lately, is often (down to about 10 new monthlie titles total). I don't have any Masterworks, but I have about three Marvel Essentials left to finish reading fully (Howard the Duck, Marvel Team-Up, the last Avengers). Unlike my wife who can read a whole novel in a weekend, I tend to read novels in small dosages (15 minutes, half hour, etc.). For that reason, I hardly ever reread old books while she can read a new book four or five times in a year. At almost 39, I'm not worrying yet about not having time to finish. (But I do have DVDs I need to get around to watching too...) Maybe if I stopped writing a fanfiction story a week, then I would have time (see link in signature). ------------------ 5 Earths Project - Earth-1 IP: Logged |

I'm WAY, WAY behind on ALL of my reading, but my regular DCU archives are in the best shape. I was caught up with them until I recently got All-Star vol.4, GA Flash vol.1, and Plastic Man vol.2 all at once. I've started reading all of them, but then today I got Batman vol.2 in the mail, and GA Green Lantern vol.1 should be coming in the not too distant future, so I'm now getting behind with those too. In addition to regular archives, I've got Thor Masterworks vol.1, 4 Essential volumes, Crisis on Multiple Earths, Archie: Best of the 40's vol.1, Greatest 1950's Stories, Superman the Dailies 1939-1940, 3 or 4 Alter Egos that I've read chunks from, Superman: From the 30's to the 70's (I'm about mid-way through the 50's), The Smithsonian Book of Comic Book Comics (haven't even started), Mad vol.1, 2 issues of the Aussie reprint comic "The Panther," a GIANT stack of Golden Age books (a mix of DC, Fox, Ace, Nedor, Quality, Fawcett, Gleason, and a few others, about 40 or so in all), a pretty big stack of Silver Age books (almost as high as the Golden Age, but not quite), and an equally tall stack of more modern material. PLUS, I haven't even bought my new books this week! I'm certainly not lacking in material to read!!! -Backlogged Steve ------------------ IP: Logged |

I've kept up pretty well with my archive reading (just the 2nd half of Superman #3 and I'll be caught up). It's my archive buying I'm behind on, and in a big way. All-Star is the only Archive series I've managed to complete so far. IP: Logged |

I tend to place newly arrived Archives at my bedside immediately, and read them concurrently with books that contain no pictures. (Radical concept, I know.) At the moment, I'm behind in my Archives reading, owing to delays in delivery, but there's no dearth of reading matter at my house, so I'm making do with Proust (Cities of the Plain, and single page of which contains as many words as any single DC Archive edition) and Robert Benchley. Other than comics and light fiction (sf and mysteries mostly), my other heavy reading habit is history, which has been suffering greatly of late. I must own a thousand history books (that's not an exaggeration) that I haven't read yet, and I've pretty much stopped acquiring new ones except in special circumstances, partly because of space considerations. I'm currently about 6 months behind, plus I have a ton of regular books I haven't read. However, I'm in the middle of a big push to get caught up. I'm not going to give the complicated details until I simplify it some by catching up, but this thread might disappear soon. IP: Logged |

I enjoy this topic when it comes up. It's fun to see how many of us are woefully behind in reading our favorite series of books. I'm quite behind, as well. I've gotten myself to read each new archives volume when it is pubished. So, I'm fairly caught up on recent books. HOwever, I've got quite a backlog to address. I'm reading archives, masterworks and trade paperbacks in a rotation of six books. Generally, that rotation consists of 2 GA archives, 1 SA archives, and 3 marvel masterworks or tpbs. It's gratifying to see my unread stack diminishing. Of course, I'm way behind on reading Alter Ego, reading back issues I've amassed over the years, and rereading certain things (like Legion archives from start to finish!). At 41, I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever catch up! IP: Logged |

I like to build up a stack of new volumes and then plow through them in a week-long orgy of oldies. So far this week, I've read Wonder Woman 4, All-Star 8, Batman in WF 1 and Spirit 8, with Spirit 9, GL 4, Shazam 3, Plastic Man 4, Aquaman 1, THUNDER Agents 1 and Batman ynamic Duo 1 waiting in the pile. Hmmm, this might take 2 weeks.IP: Logged |

It is hard to keep up. Some of the Golden Age stuff is hard to get through but I've managed. I read the Sgt. Rock and Enemy Ace archives in a couple of days while it took me a couple of weeks to get through some of the All Star volumes. IP: Logged |

Since I last posted, I finished Plastic Man and Wonder Woman, read Aquaman, and more than halfway thru Dynamic Duo. I also read "Sandman: The Dream Hunters" and at least a half a dozen novels. I will be picking up "Batman: Child of Dreams" and "Justice League Archives, V5" this week, with "Spectre Archives, V1" next week. That'll keep me busy on the comics side for a while. IP: Logged |
